The following books are recommended by Neutrois Outpost contributors and their friends. Most of these books can be found at Amazon and the TG-oriented CDS Bookstand. If neither place has it, try IFGE's Synchronicity Bookstore. Depending on where you live, you might also find them at your local public library. Transgender Warriors--A History of Resistance from Joan of Arc to Dennis Rodman Leslie Feinberg (Beacon Press, 1996)
Paradoxes of Gender Judith Lorber (Yale University Press, 1994) This book challenges almost all culturally established assumptions about gender by arguing that gender perceptions are entirely socially constructed. Highly recommended and insightful.

Read My Lips: Sexual Subversion and the End of Gender Riki Anne Wilchins (Firebrand Books, 1998)
Gender Shock: Exploding the Myths of Male and Female Phyllis Burke (Anchor, 1996)
Sex, Gender and Sexuality: 21st Century Transformations Dr. Tracie O'Keefe, DCH, et. al. (Unknown, 1999) Discusses physical and mental gender within gay, lesbian, transgendered, intersexed, nongendered, and othergendered contexts.
Sex Changes: the Politics of Transgenderism Pat Califia (Cleis, 1997)
Second Skins (A Gender and Culture Reader) Jay Prosser (Columbia University Press, 1998).
Transgender Nation Gordene Olga MacKenzie (Bowling Green State University, 1994) Examines the MTF transgender within society, the history of the TG Movement, and contemporary medical and popular attitudes.
Body Alchemy: Transsexual Portraits Loren Cameron (Cleis, 1996) A personal and power masterpiece regarding several aspects of the FTM transition experience.
Transmen and FTMs: Identities, Bodies, Genders, and Sexualities Jason Cromwell (University of Illinois, 1999)
The Drag King Book Del LaGrace Volcano & Judith Jack Halberstam (Consortium Book Sales & Dist., 1999)
Stone Butch Blues Leslie Feinberg (Firebrand Books, 1993) Leslie's life and the challenges he faced as a butch and a transgender during the 50's, 60's, and 70's. A deeply personal, passionate, and provocative read.
The Last Time I Wore a Dress Daphne Scholinski with Jane Meredith Adams (Riverhead Books, 1998) It’s a rare person who can read Daphne’s adolescent journey through gender dysphoria and mental institutions without wanting to scream in frustration. This book is important not only because it details some of the risks GID youth can face, but how society, even now, sickly equates forced feminine behavior with sanity.
Queer Studies: A Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Anthology Edited by Brett Beemyn & Mickey Eliason (New York University Press, 1996) A collection of essays on various aspects of the Lesbian, Gay, and Transgender movements, identity politics, queer culture, lesbian feminism, and other topics.
Cassell's Encyclopedia of Queer Myth, Symbol, and Spirit: Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Lore Edited by Randy P. Connor, David Sparks, and Mariya Sparks (Cassell Academic, 1997) Large resource of information pertaining to LGBT spirituality, ranging from mythology, to persons involved in current GLBT spiritual movements. Covers items within a large range of religious belief systems.
Drag: A History of Female Impersonation in the Performing Arts Roger Baker (New York University Press, 1994) A history of the rise, fall, and revival of drag on the theatrical stage.
The Tranny Guide, 8th Ed. Vicki Lee (Way Out Publishing, 2000) A travel guide for transgender experiences. Not only does this book contain personal accounts of TGs from around the world, it's loaded with pics, and information on TG-friendly places to visit.

Working with a Transsexual: A Guide for Coworkers Janis Walworth (Center for Gender Sanity, 1999) An easily understood guide for persons who work with a TG employee.

Physician's Guide to Transgendered Medicine Sheila Kirk, M.D. (Together Lifeworks, 1996) Discusses approaches in Transgendered care for medical professionals.
Feminizing Hormonal Therapy for the Transgendered Sheila Kirk, M.D. (Together Lifeworks, 1996) Current and accurate information on hormone regimens for the MTF TG. Also discusses physical changes, what to expect, self-exam guidelines, natural hormones, and dangers involved in hormone treatments.
Masculinizing Hormonal Therapy for the Transgendered Sheila Kirk, M.D. (Together Lifeworks, 1996) The FTM version of the above book.
Medical, Legal & Workplace Issues for the Transsexual Sheila Kirk, M.D. & Martine Rothblatt, J.D. (Together Lifeworks, 1995) Provides guidelines and coaching on various aspects of transition. Deals with topics such as: employer/coworker reaction, family, real life test, hormones, surgery, recovery, and moving on.
Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster: a Guide of Mind Body Techniques - Peggy Huddleston, MTS (Angel River Press, 1996) This book is designed to provide helpful techniques for lowering stress prior to surgery, healing faster, and strengthening the immune system.
